Traveling on a budget in Spain is not a problem. The country’s railway network is a comfortable and affordable way to explore the most beautiful corners of the country. From mountain passes and ancient cities to sunny coastlines—discover with us the routes that will take your breath away. We’ll show you how to plan your journey, save money, and get the most out of your railway adventure.
Why choose the train as your mode of transport?
tSpain’s AVE railway network is one of the most modern in Europe. High-speed trains cross the country from the northern mountains to the southern beaches, reaching speeds of up to 310 kilometers (193 mi) per hour. Traveling in Spain takes on a whole new dimension—within a few hours, you can travel from bustling Barcelona to vibrant Madrid or from historic Seville to the coastal Valencia.
For example, a drive from Madrid to Barcelona can take 6 hours (without stops), while the train journey takes only 2.5 hours.
In addition to high-speed trains, there are cercanías, or suburban trains, around major cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia). They are inexpensive and can be used for traveling within the city and the surrounding areas (up to approximately 100 km (62 mi).
Tip for traveling in Spain: It is recommended to arrive at the station at least half an hour in advance and up to an hour during peak times. Stations are usually large, and platforms for high-speed trains are separated from regular ones by a security check. The security is less strict than at airports, but waiting in line still takes some time.
Also, don’t forget your identification. Sometimes, even for domestic trains, identification is required, especially for AVE trains.
How to get tickets?
The easiest way is to buy tickets on Raileurope.com with discounted advance purchase and print the tickets at home or pick them up at the station or through Renfe’s official website. The earlier you buy your tickets, the more you save. High-speed trains often offer significantly lower prices when booked in advance.
Travel tip for Spain: Renfe offers a rail pass that allows unlimited travel for a set period. This is ideal if you want to travel around Spain extensively and visit as many places as possible.

Most Impressive Train Routes
- Barcelona–Madrid: This is the backbone route of Spain’s railway system. The train travels through the impressive landscape of Aragón and offers views of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range. As mentioned, you’ll cover the 621 kilometers (386 mi) in just 2.5 hours, faster than any other mode of transport.
- Madrid–Sevilla: This route reveals the contrasts of Spain’s landscape. Starting from the central plateau, you gradually descend into the fertile Guadalquivir valley. Along the way, you’ll pass whitewashed villages set on hillsides and olive groves stretching to the horizon.
- Barcelona–Valencia: The coastal route offers views of the Mediterranean Sea and typical Spanish towns. Valencia’s charm will reward you with its architecture and great cuisine.
- Bilbao–Santander: This northern route winds through the green mountains and valleys of the Basque Country and Cantabria, where nature creates stunning views.
- Ronda–Algeciras: This short but breathtaking journey in Andalusia passes through canyons and bridges with views of dramatic cliffs.
